by cpmatthew @ Thursday, Mar. 23, 2006 - 12:32:22 pm

I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. Following the Russian Tattoo rush and the Burlesque Bubble we now have a run on books about Japanese Joinery...

Where will it end?

At least the sun is finally out, though I had to act fast this morning to avoid the books in the window being zapped.

Bookselling: a life of endless struggle - discuss...

Bookzapping: please elaborate.

Zapping is an essential technical term in bookselling (like detritus and fluff for road sweeping) that refers to the effect of sun rays on books.

They get zapped. Imagine putting a book in an oven then imagine the oven isn't there - cooking without an oven for books ok?

So what's in our window now then? Roast chicken?

No - all books were removed before zapping had had time to happen. Although zapping is usually understood to be more or less instant (superheroes etc), in the bookselling sense it is (of course!) an altogether slower, more beard scratching process...

So in the summer we will have nothing in our windows at all.

People in swimming costumes?

Sandcastles?

Or we could rig up some solar panels and cut down on the electricity bills a bit?

It's not all bad...
