A touchy feminist writes:

by cpmarie @ Sunday, May. 07, 2006 - 11:52:10 pm

Yesterday, the Guardian published a list of "fifty books you must read", which you can find here. (They resisted the temptation, at least, to add the words "before you die". I once had a customer looking with sadness at just such an entitled book, saying how perfect a gift it would be for her father-in-law, if only he wasn't seriously ill in hospital.) The uniting theme of this particular list-building exercise is that all of the books in question have been turned into movies. It's a pretty unremarkable list, so once you have entertained yourself for the full twenty seconds that it affords, you can do what I did, and count the number of books written by women. Then count the number of books in which women are raped, murdered, or purchased for sex. Guess which there are more of. No surprise to this touchy feminist.

Thanks for that link. I feel really depressed now. People think I bang on about female country music artists too much, but it's for precisely the same reason. They're always the last to be added to radio playlists in the US, and the first to be dropped by record companies in roster reshuffles. I know too many men who would have to be forced at gunpoint to read books or listen to music made by women. Gah!

The other day, we had a middle-aged male customer who said, grinning broadly at me, "Of course, I'd never read a book written by a woman." I smiled back. I didn't say, "Why not? Are they a little bit difficult for your weak male brain to understand?" It's quite amazing that someone would feel they could say that to a female employee of a bookshop without causing offense.

Just thought I'd let you know that I came especially to visit your shop on Saturday having read your blog. Very lovely it was too -- great selection. I didn't buy anything though; I forgot my wallet.
