What a coincidence...

by cpmarie @ Tuesday, May. 09, 2006 - 11:50:37 pm

We have just launched our online shop. You can find it here. By coincidence, Waterstones have also just announced the launch of their online shop, due to go live in the Autumn. Given certain debates that have been taking place on this site of late, shall we just say how glad we are to see Waterstones making such a brave move and that we wish them every success? And let's just leave it at that, shall we?

Waterstone's made two serious errors of judgement ; firstly when they closed their book search department, and secondly when they went to Amazon as providers for their internet web design and software.

There is an old saying:-
"The rich man's strength is his castle, the poor man's poverty its destruction".

Without a strong and viable bookshop presence on UK's terrestial high street, the publishers will be continuing to supply the Tesco's and Amazon's of this world at discounts which permit them to predatory price against *all* the terrestial bookshops.

Over the years both Waterstone's and Ottakar's have willingly referred their customers to my business knowing that I might be able to supply an uncommon title which they do not shelve or cannot find.

All terrestial bookshops need one another : none of us are much better than the other, we all have strong and weak points. Many of us older hands realise that we (terrestial bookshops) are an endangered species until such time as we can knock some sense into the publishers discounts terms which are loaded against the traditional book outlets (be they W H Smith, Waterstone's, Ottakar's or a local indie)

Waterstone's are your friends if only you would realise it ; your enemies are Tesco, Amazon and anybody else determined to undermine the viability of *all* the terrestial bookshops by predatory pricing, sadly often assisted by publishers wanting sales without considering long-term implications.

I have to agree with Clive here. I've never had as many issues with Waterstones as the boys do although there are certain things I object to. But given a choice, I'd prefer a world where the only places I can buy books are branches of Waterstones than where the only places I can buy books are Amazon and Asda. The real villain in the piece was the legistlative decision to allow discounting in the first place. At least before then we were all on a more or less level playing field and competing on things like service made a real difference.
